BMW Mini Liquid Assets

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Games, Videos, Free Apps,

Mini Financial Services has launched a new iPhone and iPod touch game dubbed MINI Liquid Assets. This is based on the retro water-filled handheld games where you pushed a button to get one object to hit another. Based on an exhibit originally designed for dealers, you shoot nickels into the Mini-Es to keep more assets while in the liquid. (We are guessing that they paid big bucks to develop the clever play on words.) The download is free at the iTunes App Store, but as this is also a commercial, the main menu has a link to your nearest BMW Mini dealer.

You get to play with your iPhone or iPod touch apps all the time, so next time you go on an extended trip, instead of hearing “Are we there yet?” pass your brats the phone with one of the iKids Play titles installed. One of the applications has 5 activities that include a coloring book, stories, finger painting, reading/recording aloud and a hidden image game. The company claims that it promotes tactile, listening and motor skills, visual/spatial coordination and color recognition as will as reading. TapDefense: Free (and fantastic) tower defense game

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Games, Reviews, Free Apps,

TapDefense

There are a few tower defense games available in the , but we think we’ve come across the best in TapDefense. Aside from being a free game, it’s really well done. The gameplay progresses in difficulty just as you’d expect it to, and developer LL Group even worked in the accelerometer into the gameplay - not something you find in your typical tower defense game. One of the towers available is an earthquake tower, and when enemies approach it, you shake your iPhone or iPod touch in order to destroy them. Very nice. In all, you’ve got 42 levels, six tower types, and seven different enemies to combat. And like we said, it’s free.

Enjoying Tap Tap Dance

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Games, Reviews, Tapulous, $4.99,

Tap Tap DanceJust a quick not to let you guys know that we think the new Tap Tap Dance iPhone game is fantastic. Tapulous has put out a couple versions of Tap Tap Revenge already, so we didn’t think this one would be that big a deal - we figured same game with different music. Plus, we aren’t big fans of dance music anyway. However, this game just works. We love the background visuals (of which there are quite a few), the music actually adds a lot to the game (it features tracks by artists like Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers.) We also like the whole progression system, where you need to meet certain requirements to unlock some of the more advanced tracks and challenges. Overall, very fun. We recommend it. You can pick up Tap Tap Dance in the App Store.

The App Store is a gamble for developers

Earlier today, I received word that a second iPhone App had been denied access into the App Store, with Apple citing that the application duplicates existing functionality already found in the Apple ecosystem. This is beginning to become a problem, and if you aren’t seeing why, allow me to explain why this is so alarming to me. In case you hadn’t heard, a couple of weeks ago, an app called Podcaster was rejected by Apple for similar reason. The line of thinking there was that Podcaster, an app that would allow you to subscribe to and download podcasts while on the go, duplicated functionality already found in iTunes.

Now, if you’ve never used an , allow me to point out the absurdity. There is nothing on the iPhone or that allows you to subscribe to, or even download, a podcast to your device. Sure, you can open the file in Safari, but that is not what we are talking about. That’s right, even if you enter the iTunes app, you will find right away that podcasts just aren’t there. So we have to then assume that Apple was referring to the iTunes desktop software when they said that Podcaster duplicated functionality. Really? Is that a major issue that a company decided to fix a gaping hole on the iPhone, even if that hole doesn’t exist on the desktop? Why, then, are there so many calculators in the App Store? After all, not only do we have a calculator as part of OS X, but there is a calculator that ships installed by default on the iPhone as well. It seems we have a double-standard here.

E3 2008: Live from the EA Media Briefing

We are seated for the Electronic Arts E3 2008 Media Briefing. We start the conference off right, with a montage of a ton of upcoming titles, focusing on some new sports titles, upcoming Sims releases, and a bunch of casual games like Monopoly, Boogie, and Operation (aw yeah!) Of course, Spore is also featured here as well.

John Riccitiello hits the stage to talk about what EA has this afternoon to show us, and he says they won’t be doing PowerPoint, statistics, or sales figures. Instead, they are going to focus on the games, and we will be hearing from the people that make the games.

Rod Humble of The Sims Studio comes out to talk about The Sims. He announces Sim Animals. in this game you create groups of animals and their friends, habitat, etc. Some animals are friendly like deer and rabbits, while wolves and bears can stir up trouble. We then get a trailer. We get a baby cub bear interacting with a squirrel, and then a fox joins the fray. It seems that you basically control the game by using the world as your UI, you have a hand similar to Black and White. Will be exclusive to and Nintendo DS in January 2009.

Tap Tap Revenge coming to App Store

My pal Nate True has been hard at work on improving his iPhone game, tap Tap Revolution. He made the game in his spare time after jailbreaking his phone early on, and then it got bought up by a new iPhone App company called Tapulous. They went into sweatshop mode, and it turns out that the game (which they are hoping makes it into the at launch) has come a long way from the version you will find in Installer.app.

First of all, it has received a name change. Tap Tap Revolution has become Tap Tap Revenge, and it features improved graphics, the addition of shakes (where you shake the phone to do certain actions), and a hot-looking two player mode. Check the video above for proof. The game will ship with a a few songs, and you can download add-ons (a la Rock Band and Guitar Hero) for free. Down the road, there should be tracks available for purchase as well. The reason for having to download tracks is because has stupidly put more silly restrictions on iPhone developers, and Apps don’t get access to the iTunes library. Sigh.

If you like rhythm games, this is gonna be one to download. It will be available for free, and you can download it from the App Store on July 11th.
